The murder of Charlie Kirk. If there has been any recent event that has riveted people’s attention, it is the murder of Charlie Kirk. What are we to make of it? As Christians, how do we respond? How should that response be different from that of others?
There are many levels to consider. First, there is the obvious political one. Many, even perhaps most, of the responses have been brutal and ugly. While one can argue that the ugliness has been more prominent on one side of the political aisle than the other, that other side has not been immune. Vitriol and hatred tend to beget vitriol and hatred in response. Yet, to rhetorically paint everyone on whichever side of the aisle with the same all-encompassing brush is unwarranted.
Then we have the philosophical underpinnings to what is taking place. Thuse underpinnings have been in place in some respects since even before the 1960s, but arguably rose to prominence in the 1970s and 1980s. They trace to philosophical and cultural postmodernism, a now more or less forgotten passe term. But it is those now taken for granted beliefs that have led us to our culture of lies. If one believes that there is no truth, neither are there any real lies. And socially, in reality, we are inundated with lies.
But, however important those issues may be, ultimately neither get to the root of the problem. Both of those issues are merely symptoms of the underlying disease, a disease that is first and foremost spiritual. Those spiritual issues deserve the bulk of our attention.
As we will see, biblically, hating the shooter is not the answer. Does the shooter need to face the consequences of his actions? Absolutely. But hatred is not the answer. As already mentioned, hatred only begets more hatred. Responding to a person’s outright evil and sinful actions in ways that are also biblically sinful is not helpful.
To summarize, in the course of this series, we will be looking at many different issues, from the political to the philosophical, to the underlying spiritual core. How long or short the series may be, is at this point, uncertain. As always, there is the personal disclaimer that I have deliberately chosen not to be a member of any political party. While politics is in some sense unavoidable, as human government involves politics, the main issue is not political, but spiritual.
We will nevertheless start our discussion with an examination of what is going on politically, in the next post.
