This coming Sunday, December 3, is the first Sunday of Advent, traditionally the start of the Christian Year. Advent, like Lent, is a time of preparation: for Advent it is preparing for the coming of Christ. Advent first looks at the promise of Christ’s second coming, and as it gets closer to Christmas, Christ’s first coming. More than anything, as a time of preparation, Advent is a season of repentance.
This Advent, pastor James will be doing a special series on our need to repent, for us as Christians, to get right with God. In the United States, it is still somewhat peaceful, but that time will likely soon draw to a close. Barring national repentance, persecution is coming. If we don’t get right with God now, we won’t be able to stand, to stand firm in the days that are coming.
In Jeremiah 12:5, God asks Jeremiah an open question, a question worth our consideration: “If you have run with footmen and they have tired you out, Then how can you compete with horses? If you fall down in a land of peace, How will you do in the thicket of the Jordan?” (NAU)
