The End Times: Islam vs. the Bible, Part 6b: Revisiting Eesa

Islam’s Eesa (Isa/Issa) and the end times. Biblically, what do we make of Islam’s version of Jesus and his actions?

Islam is clear: Eesa is a Muslim. Many times within the Qur’an, Eesa denies that he is God, that the Christians who claim he is a god are in error. Therefore, Eesa returns as a Muslim. He arrives at one of the times for daily prayer, and the Mahdi offers Eesa the opportunity to lead them in the prayer as the imam. Eesa declines, and instead places himself in a subordinate position, under the Mahdi.

Among the first events that follow, Eesa kills the Dajjal, the Islamic equivalent of the biblical Antichrist. One can see a twisted version of Scripture: Jesus kills the archenemy, but not as “King of Kings” and “Lord of Lords.” As we have seen, Eesa is not a savior, he is not a son of God, let alone the Son of God; he is just a human messenger, a slave of Allah.

But what else does Eesa do? He breaks the crosses and kills the pigs. He destroys Christianity. The cross is central to Christianity, and as Christians eat pork, while Jews and Muslims do not, pigs must be killed.

Jesus goes further. In defeating the Dajjal, according to many hadiths, Eesa also kills numerous Jews. Indeed, since Eesa has demonstrated to both Jews and Christians that he is a Muslim, both groups no longer have an excuse for their respective errors about his identity. They must either convert or be killed.

That is what happens. As we saw, Eesa is over a religious world that is united under the perfect sharia. Eesa abolishes the jizya (the poll-tax all Jews and Christians had to pay to Muslims in order to be allowed to live for another year within a Muslim state to avoid being killed): there are no protected non-Muslims to pay it; there are no non-Muslims at all.

We see Eesa functioning in a religious capacity. He destroys non-Islamic religion; he makes a religious ruling regarding the jizya. He is deeply involved in the process of causing non-Muslims to die.

Does the Bible describe anyone like that in the end-times? Specifically, in relation to the Antichrist, does anyone come to mind?

That sounds something like the biblical false prophet, doesn’t it? While Eesa does not match the false prophet quite as closely as the Mahdi matches the Antichrist, there are interesting parallels. He also works under the Mahdi just as the false prophet works under the Antichrist.

What is also curious, is that as we saw, the focus ends up on Eesa more than on the Mahdi. For example, consider Eesa’s intercession regarding Yajooj and Majooj. Yet even that serves as an example of how Eesa is a subordinate, of his weakness. He cannot fight them (not a “King of Kings”). It is as though Allah is seeking to belittle Jesus; Jesus, God’s Son, fully human, but also fully Divine.

As Islam rejects the biblical Jesus, and is thereby biblically considered an antichrist religion (see 1 John), it will not end well for Muslims. Ultimately, either Christianity is true, or Islam is true. If Islam is true, all Christians will end up in hell. If Christianity is true, all Muslims will end up in hell. It is telling that Islam’s end-time leaders tie directly to the biblical Antichrist, and to a lesser extent, the false prophet. Muslims are expecting a glorious future under the Mahdi and Eesa. Instead, they will get something they did not bargain for, eternal hell.

The good news is that God still changes lives, God still breaks through spiritual darkness and deception. Coming to faith in the true Jesus remains possible. Consider Saul of Tarsus: perhaps the worst early “hate-filled terrorist” there was. Consider how Jesus Christ changed him. Jesus is still changing lives today. Pray for Muslims. God loves them, and we need to, as well.
