Just how ungodly are false teachers and false prophets?
Jude 1:14–16: “It was also about these men that Enoch, in the seventh generation from Adam, prophesied, saying, ‘Behold, the Lord came with many thousands of His holy ones, to execute judgment upon all, and to convict all the ungodly of all their ungodly deeds which they have done in an ungodly way, and of all the harsh things which ungodly sinners have spoken against Him.’ These are grumblers, finding fault, following after their own lusts; they speak arrogantly, flattering people for the sake of gaining an advantage.
Four aspects of their ungodliness are mentioned. But first, who or what is being quoted? Some say that Jude is quoting the apocryphal Book of Enoch. Enoch was most likely written between the third century B.C., and the third century A.D. As it never existed in ancient Hebrew, it was never accepted as part of the Old Testament canon by the Jews. Others say that Jude received direct revelation via the Holy Spirit, as the quote doesn’t match the Book of Enoch. For our purposes, the debate is immaterial to the issue at hand.
What are the four aspects of their ungodliness? First, they are by definition, ungodly. That is their basic personality, their basic character. Second, their deeds are ungodly. Their actions are contrary to God’s nature. Third, not only are their deeds ungodly, the manner that they commit them is also ungodly. Fourth, they speak harsh ungodly words against God. In essence, ungodliness marks all aspects of who they are.
How do these ungodly characteristics show themselves? First, they are grumblers and fault finders. They complain and look for ways to accuse. One could say that they seek to stir up dissent, to disrupt the unity within the church. Second, they follow their own lusts. They seek after their own selfish fleshly desires. While they might claim otherwise, they aren’t concerned with the needs of others. Third, their speech is arrogant. Fourth, their speech isn’t just arrogant, they also flatter others in order to gain an advantage over them. That too, is ingenuine isn’t it? Flattery may sound nice, but there’s always a hidden agenda behind it.
Is there anything positive to point to in these false teachers? No. Although they may appear otherwise by putting up a false front in order to deceive, there is nothing good in them. They are ungodly to their very core. As the passage we’re looking at starts out, God will judge them.
We’ll see in the next post that we, as believers, all too easily forget past warnings about their arrival within, and their attempts to disrupt, the church.
