Yajooj and Majooj. Everything they touch, they will destroy. Allah has now released them. They have burrowed out from their underground hiding place, something Allah had prevented until this point. And worse, Allah tells Eesa that he, Eesa, cannot defeat them. No “King of Kings” and “Lord of Lords” to be found here.

Yajooj and Majooj. If that seems vaguely familiar to various biblical passages, there is good reason. They are the Islamic version of Gog and Magog. Not only do they seek to destroy the earth, but they will also attack and seek to destroy heaven. Unlike in the Bible, they appear after Jesus has returned, not before. Islam’s version is yet another way to denigrate the real Jesus.

As Allah tells Eesa that he will not be able to fight them, Eesa is instructed to flee to the mountains. Once there, Eesa will pray to Allah, specifically for Allah’s intervention. After Yajooj and Majooj attempt to attack heaven—Allah will paint the ends of their arrows red so that they will think they have succeeded—Allah will inflict all the hordes of Yajooj and Majooj with camel and sheep nose worms. They will all die at once during one night. Birds will carry their corpses away to the sea (or beasts and cattle will gorge on their carcasses). Allah will cause rain to fall on the earth for 40 days, and the rain will cleanse the earth (does that sound familiar?). Also of interest, some of related hadith refer to Jesus as “maseeh” meaning messiah.

After the destruction of Yajooj and Majooj, people will continue to do the hajj (required pilgrimage to Mecca), although just before the end, after Eesa has died (as a mere human Eesa will suffer natural death), the hajj will cease.

Once more there will briefly be great plenty. Allah will then take all the souls of the believers away, leaving only evil people (does that also sound familiar?). Some versions say that before that happens, people will be burning the weapons of Yajooj and Majooj for seven years (this version seems directly plucked from Ezekiel 39:9–10).

At that point, another sign will be fulfilled. Dhee as-Suwaiqatain (other sources: Jahjaa), from the general area of Ethiopia, and who may have appeared earlier, will go forward and destroy the Ka’ba. No one will stop him, as no one left on the earth knows why the Ka’ba was important. He will remove its covering and steal its jewels. People will leave Mecca, never to return.

Still more signs are to come, among them, the rising of the sun in the West, and the coming of the beast. We will turn to those signs in the next post.

*At this point it is worth asking a question: Why is this series important? It matters as it deals with what Islam teaches, how those teachings relate to what Scripture states, and what we might expect. For example, when does the Mahdi come? He comes within the context of a major war, a time of chaos. As we saw, hadiths differ as to who will win that war. But a war between Islam and the West (Rome)? Muhammad predicted that Islam would defeat Byzantium (the East) first, then Rome (the West). Thus that war comes to the forefront.

Some Muslims believe that they can hasten the Mahdi’s arrival, in part by taking steps to prepare for his coming caliphate. Many of the leaders of Iran hold to that, as did ISIS. Many events, both current and over the last few years, reflect those beliefs: the chaos and destruction ISIS caused, and currently, what Iran hopes to instigate. Ironically, Iran and ISIS fought against each other, as each insisted that the other was apostate (Iran is Shiite, ISIS was Sunni).

It is critical for us to remember that God, the One yet Triune God of the Bible is in charge, not Allah. We need to intercede accordingly, to be aware, to stay ever closer to Jesus Christ, and most importantly, not to be afraid (see Matthew 10:28). As believers in Christ, our eternal future is secure.
