In Islam, who is Eesa (also spelled Issa or Isa)?
On a surface level, the answer is straight forward: Eesa is the Islamic version of Jesus. Biblically speaking though, Eesa is not the biblical Jesus. Indeed, Arab Christians never use the Islamic name(s) for the biblical Jesus. Historically, at least a few Islamic scholars objected to conflating Jesus with Eesa.
Nevertheless, in most of the literature the two are equated with each other. Sadly, and over the objections of Arab Christians, recent Arabic bible translations have started to adopt “Eesa,” a choice that causes considerable confusion. Similarly, many English translations of the Qur’an use Jesus instead of Eesa, Issa, or Isa.
The Qur’an is clear: Eesa is not God; he is not the son of God; he was not begotten by God; he is not a savior, let alone the Savior. He is a slave of Allah, a messenger of Allah, ultimately subordinate to Muhammad (although the Qur’an presents him as superior to Muhammad in many respects). He was not crucified; he did not die for our sins; rather, he was taken directly up into heaven by Allah, only appearing to be crucified. None of that has any resemblance to the biblical Jesus, does it?
What is fascinating, is that as one reads through the Islamic accounts of Eesa, they often tie in to various Gnostic gospels, infancy gospels, and other false documents about Jesus. Historically, many of these gnostic writings have been dated to sometime around the start of the fourth century. The Nag Hammadi manuscripts are probably the most well-known of these sorts of writings.
In the Qur’an, Jesus is born of the Virgin Mary (Maryam), but the birth takes place under a palm tree. There is no Joseph. While Zechariah does check in on her, her needs are supernaturally met by Allah.
But in a strange twist, according to the Qur’an, Mary, the mother of Jesus, is the daughter of Amran (‘Imran)! In other words, Mary, the mother of Jesus, is the sister of Moses and Aaron. We will examine that in the next post.
