Islamic Paradise. If ever there was a world designed to cater to human sensual desires of all types, it is Allah’s Paradise. If there is one description of Paradise that occurs repeatedly in the Qur’an, it is that Paradise consists of well-watered lush gardens. For a desert-based culture and land, what could be more pleasing than shady, well-watered, lush gardens?

Paradise will have eight gates, and every Muslim will be called to a gate, or gates, based on the practices they excelled at. The gates are: fasting, prayer, charity (zakat), pilgrimage, the lesser pilgrimage, jihad, the gate of joining ties with relatives/controlling anger/pleased with Allah, and on the extreme right, the gate reserved for those whom Allah did not require accountability, those who did not have to go through all the misery of the tests on the Day of Judgment. Some devout Muslims will be called to go through all eight gates. Their works will attest to that level of devotion.

Surah 55:46–78 speaks of many of the delights of Paradise, from the lush green gardens, trees, springs of water, and fruits, to luxurious beds, cushions and carpets, to more earthy pleasures. Some of the English translations of the Qur’an are restrained on that latter topic, although at least one is far more graphic (and arguably more direct in relation to the Arabic).

Hadiths speak of rivers of milk, honey, and wine. Believers will be clothed in silk. Some of the trees will cast so much shade that a fast rider, riding for one hundred years would not leave its shade. Interestingly, wine, along with all forms of alcohol, as well as dressing in silk, are all forbidden to Muslims on earth. Alcoholic drinks are the work of Satan (Surah 5:90). Although the wine in Paradise is not intoxicating, nor harmful in any way, given its origin, its appearance in Paradise is curious.

Some hadith say that Paradise will have one hundred levels, and in yet another plagiarism of Scripture, one hadith has Allah saying that what he has prepared has not been seen, heard, thought of, or even entered the hearts of humans.

Castles will be constructed out of blocks of silver and gold, rooms out of precious stones. For every believer there will be pavilions sixty miles long made of a single pearl, in each pavilion will be many rooms, each with a gold (or separate pearl) door, and in each room a wife—a houri, a special maiden of Paradise—will reside.

The inhabitants of Paradise will have the strength of one hundred men, in eating, in drinking, and especially in sexual desire and intercourse. Each believer will have seventy-two houris for physical pleasure, in addition to the wives they had on earth. In terms of sex, the hadiths get very, very graphic, and it is best to refrain from providing details here. It is noteworthy that in some internet discussions Muslims deny the existence of Houris—given who they are, their attitudes, and why they exist—personal embarrassment is possible. Houris are docile, subservient sex objects, nothing more. But the hadiths, the actions and words of Muhammad that all Muslims are to follow, speak of them at length. The Qur’an mentions the houris multiple times as well. There is no denial of their existence within Islam. I wonder: for women, how is this Paradise? Islamic Paradise seems very male-centric.

Thus, Islamic Paradise. Just as hellfire is described in fantastically brutal terms, Paradise is described in even more extraordinary, sensual terms.

But note, Muslims are not the only group that the angel Gabriel said would enjoy sex in Paradise. Just as Gabriel revealed Islam to its sole founder, Muhammad, he also revealed Mormonism to its sole founder, Joseph Smith. Mormons were also promised sex in eternity. As Jesus indicated there would be no sex in eternity, do you think that just maybe, the “angel Gabriel” is someone, or something else?

We have now looked at both Allah’s Hellfire and Allah’s Paradise. In order to survive the trials, and even for the opening of Paradise, Muhammad’s intercession is crucial. We will turn to that topic starting with the next post.
