So, little Oral Roberts University just made it to the Sweet 16 in the NCAA men’s basketball tournament. For sports fans that’s a fun thing, right?
Well, it should be, but outrage is being voiced, ranging from their games should not be shown, to their games should be cancelled, to not even allowing colleges like ORU into the tournament, given their bigoted, archaic Christian beliefs. Cancel Culture is indignant, highly offended.
It is interesting to me that certain groups, after demanding recognition and rights for themselves, are now demanding rights be removed from all others who dare to disagree with them. There is one overarching word to describe this stance: hypocrisy, the unwillingness to grant to others what you want others to grant to you.
In many ways, for Christians, this should not be surprising. The end of Romans 1 is very direct about what is going on. Deep down, there is an awareness that what is being practiced and advocated doesn’t end well. Rather than deal with that reality, it is better to eradicate and silence any group that might bring that awareness to the surface.
It is certainly true that God gives us a lot of freedom to live how we want, doing what we want. God also warns us that doing what we want, living according to the flesh as the Scriptures describe it, doesn’t end well. To me, Luther said it well, “Sin boldly.” If one wants to totally reject God, do so. In essence, don’t pretend to be something you aren’t. But, Ecclesiastes 11:9 gives an interesting warning, in essence saying do whatever you want to do, follow your desires, go for it, but know that God will judge you for all those things.
Our choices do have eternal consequences. Even if every Christian is eventually silenced, that won’t change the reality of having to face God’s eternal judgment for those actions and choices. Denial is generally viewed as a bad thing, especially when it comes to alcoholism, workaholism, physical or emotional abuse, and the like. Why then, do we think denial is a good thing when it comes to where we will spend eternity?
