Jesus. Who is He, anyway? The Church has always proclaimed that Jesus is both fully God and fully man, and the only means God has provided for the forgiveness of our sins and for our salvation.
Meanwhile, others have insisted that Jesus is something far less, that he is just a man, or that maybe a “Christ spirit” came upon him at the time of his baptism and lifted off him just before the crucifixion. Those teachings are not new. Arius in the fourth century was adamant that Jesus was not God, but a created lesser being.
Today, those alternate teachings about Jesus are again gaining ground. The idea that Jesus was just a man has been popularized by the Jesus Seminar and others. To them, Jesus was just an illiterate peasant, possibly a cynic philosopher, who uttered pithy sayings, and never claimed to be God. The biblical gospels as we have them, are mostly false (the Gnostic gospel of Thomas may be the most accurate). They are just the teachings of communities who sought to follow Jesus as the Christ, written long after his death. Note that by definition, Jesus was not actually raised. As Crossan explains it, Jesus’s body was most likely devoured by wild animals after he had died, and was either left on the cross, or buried in a shallow grave that animals soon dug up.
Others, who seek after spirituality wonder how on earth the writers of the four Gospels could have written what they wrote if Jesus was just a mere human. How anyone could write what is contained there makes no sense if Jesus was just a normal human. He had to be more than that, but what? The answer is that Jesus was profoundly aware of the “Christ spirit” that rested upon him or was contained within him. Jesus, himself, was nothing special. What he had was an awareness that few others possessed—though the Buddha also did. That “Christ spirit” is something every person can on the planet can tap into and develop, whether one is a Christian, a Druid, a Wiccan, a Buddhist, or of any other spirituality, belief system, or religion.
In the end, believing that Jesus was a mere human or that he tapped into his “Christ spirit” is ok. The one thing that is not ok is to believe what the Bible declares about him. As outlined above, one must not believe in the Jesus that the church historically has proclaimed.
As was noted in the last post, as the world of science and Buddhism start to converge, and as the world increasingly rejects what the Bible has to say, darkness is increasing, and apostasy is growing. The good news is that Jesus—the true Jesus of the Scriptures—as the light, overcomes that darkness. That is why that even in the midst of judgment, there is hope.
