Where does The Passion Translation (TPT) come from? What is its source?
We’ve seen that Brian Simmons is not qualified to do a legitimate Bible translation. But, if one goes to the TPT website, one finds all kinds of information that makes it appear that TPT is legitimate, from Brian’s (false) qualifications to methodologies used. It appears legitimate.
But within NAR circles, Simmons tells a different story, one that is 100% at odds with what is stated on the website. He tells that story on numerous podcasts, and those podcasts reveal what took place in his life and led to him creating TPT.
Simmons speaks about how he received a vision of Jesus entering his room and commissioning him to do the translation. This “Jesus” then gives him special translation skills and new revelations. He is gifted mightily—he can now understand the meaning of Scripture in ways no one before him ever has.
The name of the translation: The Passion Translation, is a case in point. From the website it appears that the goal of his translation was to bring forth God’s passion in the translation, to connect with readers emotionally. Rather than being a dry book of mental constructs, TPT is to grab hold of us in ways no other translation has ever accomplished.
In his podcasts, Simmons tells a different story. The “Jesus” he sees in his vision tells him there is an angel named Passion who oversees his ministry. The name of the translation is not based on the need for a translation that grabs our emotions, but for the angel that is over his ministry.
Does that story sound familiar? Joseph Smith spoke of his encounter with the angel Maroni. He was given special golden plates and a peep stone that enabled him to translate those plates and write the Book of Mormon. Brian Simmons has a vision of Jesus, finds out the angel Passion is over his ministry, and is given special abilities to translate the Bible in ways no one before him has ever done.
Worse, Simmons claims that more new revelation is forthcoming. In one of his visions, Simmons is transported to the heavenly library where he is given two books (he cannot yet talk about the contents). He also sees a third book that he will be given at some point in the future: John 22 (the Gospel of John only has 21 chapters). John 22 supposedly will radically transform the church on earth in ways we cannot imagine.
What does TPT look like? Are textual changes minor or significant? Is it a usable version? We’ll look at those questions in the next post.
