Good news? With all the ways local Bible-believing churches are under attack, there is good news? Yes!
Jesus is already victorious. As Ephesians 1:20–22 tells us, Jesus is now seated at the right hand of the Father, “far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come. And He put all things in subjection under His feet” (NAU). Colossians 2:15 is even more emphatic, “When He had disarmed the rulers and authorities, He made a public display of them, having triumphed over them through Him” (NAU).
The point is that Jesus is in control, not Satan. The Gospels give many examples of Jesus confronting demons. Never once did a demon win that encounter. While we have no strength in ourselves, we have great strength in Christ, and Christ through the Holy Spirit, lives in us. The devil is not destined to rule, but to spend eternity in the lake of fire, fire prepared for the devil and his angels (Matthew 25:41).
Jesus states in Matthew 16:18, that the gates of hell will not overpower the church. First, gates are defensive. The church is on the offensive, not the hellish horde. Apostate church hierarchies may succeed in removing troublesome local churches, Cupitt and his allies may succeed in subverting local churches, but in the end they will not prevail against Christ. Remember Psalm 2: the nations rage against the Lord and his anointed—God laughs.
It is sobering to consider Romans 8:36, of being put to death, of being considered sheep to be slaughtered. But as the following verse tells us, even there we are more than conquerors. One also thinks of Revelation 12:10–11, of overcoming through death. As Jesus tells us in Luke 12:4–5, we aren’t to fear those who can kill the body but do nothing beyond that. Rather we’re to fear Him who can both kill and then cast into hell. Jesus has also warned us of perilous times to come, so those times should not come upon us unaware.
No matter what might happen, we can rest secure in Christ, Christ the victor over sin, death, and the devil. God may consign a particular denomination or local church to the dustbin of history, but the true gospel will not be overcome. Jesus overcame the world, the world did not overcome Jesus.
