Where is the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) headed?

In the previous post we looked at how SBC leadership, while claiming otherwise, is embracing CRT. Why is this even an issue?

Whenever we add something to the Bible, to the Scriptures, we get into trouble. Whether it is Scripture plus tradition, or Scripture plus philosophy, whether modernism or postmodernism, or Scripture plus the values of secular culture, disaster follows. Whatever the “plus” is comes to dominate. We end up looking at the Scriptures through the lens of that “plus”. Thus, with CRT, we examine the Scriptures based on CRT, rather than looking at CRT based on what the Scriptures say. As we’ve seen, CRT is antithetical to the Scriptures, there is no acknowledgement of personal sin, of a need for personal salvation. Rather, it is a racist theory that insists that all problems are the results of race.

In all cases, our problems are solely caused by someone else. That too, goes back to the Fall in Genesis 3. Adam blamed Eve and God for his choice to eat the forbidden fruit, Eve blamed the serpent. So here too, blame is placed solely on others (woe to you if you are the “other”).

Where will the SBC go? By taking charge of all church planting, national leadership is once again bypassing the state and regional conventions. My suspicions are that most of the state conventions, not to mention existing local churches, would be opposed to the changes that are taking place, the acceptance of CRT, the adding of our works to the gospel message, of emphasizing here and now over one’s eternal destiny. It seems clear that at least some in national leadership desire to force that change upon the denomination.

At least some church planters did push back as the changes were implemented. They were told, in a positive way of course, that the revisions did not concern them, that they did not operate at that level, i.e. were not part of that conversation, and to get on with their job of church planting.

Why do these potential changes matter? As Voddie Baucham warns in Fault Line, if the SBC, as the largest evangelical denomination can be turned, any denomination can be turned. Will the SBC succumb? Barring God’s intervention, I believe that at least much of it might, and that a split, that what happened in the Episcopal Church and the Presbyterian Church—albeit for different reasons—could happen. I pray that God intervenes and that SBC leadership repents.

The good news is that God is sovereign (see Psalm 2), and his purposes will not be thwarted. Whether a given denomination or church remains faithful or not, has no eternal effect on God or his plans. It does impact what happens at that denomination or church, whether God’s blessing remains on it or not. As has been made public, the trends within the SBC are not good, as church plants are down, baptisms are down, and membership is down.

May God have mercy on the SBC, and may He wake us up to what is going on.

What do we conclude about false Gospels, churches, and Bibles?

Romans 3:4 states, “Let God be found true, though every man be found a liar.” God’s truth does not change, regardless of what the NAR, The Passion Translation, or some in the SBC, insist. In a world where everything seems to be in the process of being shaken, we can rest secure in the reality that God, and his Word, are unchanging. That is the one place we will find safety and security.
