The Passion Translation (TPT) is the best translation ever done, even better than the King James Version. There is nothing that compares to it in terms of passion and power. It has the potential to revolutionize English bible reading for decades to come. At least, that is what is claimed. Numerous endorsements from NAR advocates trumpet the great accomplishments of TPT. On Amazon, it is almost a best-selling Bible, and is readily available through Christian bookstores and via online retailers.
Where does it come from? According to the website, it is based on Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek manuscripts. Both Hebrew and Aramaic are languages of the heart, and for Scripture to take hold of a person’s life, it needs to go straight to the heart.
Brian Simmons is the head of the translation team. In the past, working with New Tribes Missions, he had served as a linguist and was a co-translator of the New Testament for the Kuna people group in Panama, which he handed them in the late 1980s (sometimes he says late 1990s). In any case, he states repeatedly that he is a qualified linguist and translator.
Are his claims true? Ethnos 360—formerly New Tribes—states that Simmons was not a linguist or translator, but a church planter, and that he was not what he claimed. Worse, Ethnos 360 states that the translation was not even done while Simmons was working with them, but years later. They note that “even back then he was prone to go off on fringe doctrinal detours.”
The TPT supposedly involves a translation team. When one delves into the details, Simmons is the sole human translator, there is not real team. Is it correct to call the TPT a translation? That answer depends on how one defines “translation”. According to Simmons anything that goes from one language to another is, by definition, a translation. However, in terms of classical biblical scholarship, we will find that TPT would not be considered a paraphrase, let alone a translation.
What we’ve seen to this point is that Brian’s claims about his qualifications are false. Perhaps they are deliberate lies, perhaps he’s been telling his stories for so long, he now believes them. The key is that they’re false. So, if he wasn’t qualified to do a genuine translation, where does TPT come from? We’ll turn to that question in the next post.
