Jezebel. If there is any one voice that has captivated our secular culture, it is Jezebel’s. Do we listen to a Jezebel?
Who was Jezebel? One finds her story in 1 Kings, chapters 16–21 and 2 Kings, chapter 9. She was the wife of the most evil king that the northern kingdom of Israel ever had, Ahab. She was the neck that turned the head of her husband.
1 Kings 21:25 (NAU): “Surely there was no one like Ahab who sold himself to do evil in the sight of the LORD, because Jezebel his wife incited him.”
What did Jezebel do? First and most important, she introduced Baal worship to the northern kingdom. As 1 Kings 16:31 tells us, Ahab married Jezebel, the daughter of Ethbaal, the king of the Sidonians, and then went after and served Baal.
What is Baal worship? The Bible tells us some things, but we’ve also learned a great deal through various archeological finds. Baal worship centered around fertility and ritualized sex. The high priest of Baal and the high priestess, often of Baal’s consort, Ashtoreth, would have ritual sex on Baal’s altar. A city-wide orgy would follow. Temple prostitution was the norm. They believed that their actions would stimulate the gods and goddesses into greater fertility; the earth would thereby be more fruitful. Not unexpectedly, infant child sacrifice was also involved. Thus, there were obvious reasons why God commanded the Israelites not to worship the gods and goddesses of the Canaanites.
Second, Jezebel hated righteous, Godly men, those who spoke what was biblically true. Apart from Elijah and the one hundred prophets that Obadiah hid, along with arguably a few others, Jezebel mostly succeeded in wiping out the prophets of God (see 1 Kings 18:4).
Third, Jezebel used existing religious norms, methods God required, when it suited her ends. One clear biblical example was how she had Naboth killed so that Ahab could seize his vineyard, a piece of property that Ahab had coveted, but that Naboth had refused to sell to him.
A case can be made that Jezebel is the most notorious woman in all of Scripture. So much so that when her demise was prophesied, her body would end up being eaten by dogs. There would not even be a body to bury. This came to pass when God wiped out Ahab’s family through Jehu.
Unfortunately, this is not the only time Jezebel is seen in Scripture. In the next post we will see how a Jezebel successfully infiltrated the church, specifically the church of Thyatira in Revelation 2:18–29.
