What we saw in the opening ceremony was an open mocking of God. Christ’s death was mocked, the celebration of Communion was mocked—a celebration that in many ways is at the heart of Christianity, and even God’s gift of human sexuality was mocked. With the nod to Dionysus, debauchery was praised.

God has much to say about open displays of sin and those who mock.

Jeremiah 6:15: “Were they ashamed because of the abomination they have done? They were not even ashamed at all; They did not even know how to blush. Therefore they shall fall among those who fall; At the time that I punish them, They shall be cast down,” says the LORD. (NAU)

Jeremiah 8:12: “Were they ashamed because of the abomination they had done? They certainly were not ashamed, And they did not know how to blush; Therefore they shall fall among those who fall; At the time of their punishment they shall be brought down,” Says the LORD.

Galatians 6:7: “Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, this he will also reap.” (NAU)

2 Peter 3:3: ”Know this first of all, that in the last days mockers will come with their mocking, following after their own lusts,

In the opening ceremony we saw sin and mocking on full display. We saw people following after their own lusts. Just as the sin of pride was celebrated in June, mockery was praised in July. As mentioned in the previous post, a demonic undercurrent was also on display.

All of this is cause for groaning, weeping, sorrow, and sadness. Galatians 6:7 warns us to not be deceived, and the people engaged in those actions at the opening ceremony are deceived. They are deceived about how it is ok to mock God, they are deceived about how it is ok to revel in sin, they are deceived regarding their sexual choices. That deception leads directly to Hell, a reality that they are also blind to. They may even think that they will party in Hell. “It is better to party in Hell than serve in Heaven,” thus said some old defiant rock and roll musicians. They too, were deceived. Hell will be a place of unending torment and misery, a place where people won’t repent, but continue to rail against God for all eternity.

The only way they’ll escape that fate is if God opens their eyes to their sin, they repent of it, ask God for forgiveness, and turn in faith to Jesus Christ. But, since God is a God of love and not of coercion, He won’t force repentance.

Let us pray for that they do come to their senses, that they repent, that they do come to salvation in and through Christ.

The sad part is, once a person has reached the point of becoming a mocker or a scoffer, repentance is rare:

Proverbs 9:7: “He who corrects a scoffer gets dishonor for himself, And he who reproves a wicked man gets insults for himself.”

Proverbs 13:1: “A wise son accepts his father’s discipline, But a scoffer does not listen to rebuke.”

We already noted 2 Peter 3:3. Mockers and scoffers become so full of themselves that that is all they see. As Proverbs 24:9 tells us, “The devising of folly is sin, And the scoffer is an abomination to men.” (NAU) Yet, what did we see? Instead of being treated as an abomination, the mocking and scoffing was celebrated.

May God break through their (and our) spiritual blindness. May God wake us up, as Christians, to what is truly going on in our day. May we stand firm in Christ.
