Unceasing misery. On the Day of Judgment, that is what non-Muslims face. For Muslims, their situation will be quite different.

As we saw in the previous post, Muhammad alone will be able to make intercession. He will also have a basin, the haud. Whoever is allowed to drink from it will have their thirst quenched, and will never thirst again (note the twist on Jesus being the source of living water: John 4). Only Muhammad’s nation will drink from it. However, those of his nation who turned away from him after his death will not be able to do so.

Every prophet that Allah sent to their respective nation will also have a haud. Remember though, every prophet before Muhammad also taught the tenets of Islam, the truths of Allah, to their respective nation. Muhammad will have the most followers.

Giant balance scales will be erected, and every person’s deeds will be weighed. Those whose good deeds outweigh their bad deeds will enter Paradise; those whose bad deed outweigh their good deeds will enter hellfire. For those who added partners to Allah, their good deeds will be nothing more than a deception; they will weigh nothing, and their destiny will be the hellfire. Thus yet again, Islam makes it clear that all Christians end up in the Hellfire.

Every person will have a scroll or book containing the record of their deeds. For those who receive their book in the right hand, they will have an easy time at the reckoning, for those who receive their book in the left hand, their future will be dreadful. The Qur’an 41:20–24, and elsewhere, states that even a person’s skin and feet will be made to testify against them, confessing the evil that the person has done. Those destined for Paradise will be gathered on the right, those destined for the hellfire will be gathered on the left (taken from Matthew 24:32ff?).

For each person that the individual has wronged, some of his good deeds will be removed and given to those he has wronged. Should the wrong-doer run out of good deeds to be transferred, Allah will then ask the person wronged to forgive the wrong-doer. One wonders: why is forgiveness only requested when the wrong-doer no longer has any good deeds left to transfer?

The first thing Allah will judge will be the compulsory daily prayers. If those prayers were right, the rest of the person’s deeds will be right; but if corrupted, the rest of the person’s deeds will be corrupt.

All other deeds will be weighed as well. Not just one’s sins on the negative side, but the paying of zakat (required charity), one’s record of fasting, and so forth. According to some, there are also all sorts of complex formulas where often a good deed, especially in terms of the prayers, will count many more times than just one.

Various hadiths state that for a Muslim who may have been so disobedient so as to be worthy of hellfire, a Jew or a Christian will be compelled to go to him, and then take their place in the hellfire. Allah will place the Muslim’s sins on the Jew or Christian, thus rescuing the Muslim from hell (a demonic perversion of Jesus’s death on the Cross for our sins). In addition, numerous hadiths state that 70,000 of Muhammad’s nation will not have to go through the judgment process.

One punishment of note: Allah will inflict punishment on everyone who painted a picture of an animal or human. He will force that person to blow a soul into the human or animal he painted, which will prove impossible (almost all art forms are forbidden within Islam).

At this point, the disbelievers, the polytheists, and all who rejected Allah, will be in the hellfire. The professing Muslims will remain. They will then have to go over the siraat, the “bridge” over the hellfire. We will examine that trial in the next post.
