The Christian Year: Some churches follow it religiously, other churches ignore it like the proverbial plague. Often, those who reject it harken back to the writings of Alexander Hislop, and his insistence that anything that can be even remotely attributed to “Roman Catholic” is nothing more than another form of Babylonian paganism. One can argue that case when it comes to the worship of Mary, but is that true of the Christian Year?
Typically, every Christmas and Easter one sees many posts on social media about how both holidays are nothing more than pagan imports: sun worship for Christmas, the worship of Ishtar for Easter.
I’ve written before how “Easter” is only so named in English and German, that in the rest of the Romance (Latin) based languages, the day is called Pascha, after 1 Corinthians 5:7. As one reads the Gospel accounts, it becomes clear that Christ fulfilled the Passover: Christ is directly linked to it. In the early days of the Church, a significant segment of it did celebrate Pascha on the same day as the Passover.
As Christianity came to be seen as separate from Judaism, rather than as a subset of it, the Church collectively decided to celebrate Pascha according to the formula we’ve used ever since: the first Sunday after the full moon that occurs on or after the spring equinox, unless the full moon falls on a Sunday, and then Easter is the Sunday after that. Pascha, like Judaism, is based on the lunar calendar.
The point is, the Christian celebration of Pascha is solely focused on the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Thus, we see that it has nothing to do with fertility rites of a pagan goddess.
We are not speaking of what the secular culture has done with Easter. It is guaranteed that Satan will counterfeit any truly biblically-based celebration, both in an attempt to corrupt it, to keep people away from placing faith in Jesus Christ, and from realizing that Satan himself is a murderer, a liar, defeated, eternally doomed to the lake of fire (see Revelation 20:10).
What about Christmas? For many that is an even thornier problem, one we’ll look at in the next post.
