Yesterday we looked at lying politicians and lying members of the news media, among others. Barring repentance, we looked at the dreadful end they are facing, and our need to pray for them.
But there are far worse liars than members of the news media or politicians. We catch a glimpse of them in Jeremiah 7:7–11. Quoting part of it: “Even the stork in the sky Knows her seasons; And the turtledove and the swift and the thrush Observe the time of their migration; But My people do not know The ordinance of the LORD. How can you say, 'We are wise, And the law of the LORD is with us'? But behold, the lying pen of the scribes Has made it into a lie.”
What were these scribes doing? They were twisting what God had said, making His truth into a lie. As Israel collapsed, the number of false teachers greatly multiplied. False prophets and their allies were applauded, those who proclaimed the truth were denounced. Those false prophets and teachers mislead the nation into disaster.
The New Testament warns us, “For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but wanting to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance to their own desires, and will turn away their ears from the truth and will turn aside to myths” (2 Tim. 4:3-4 NAU). Aren’t those same things happening to us now?
What are some of the current false teachings being applauded? They include: everyone on the planet is automatically saved through Jesus, whether they believe in Him or not (Christian universal salvation); God is a God of love alone who would never punish anyone; God the Father portrayed as female (The Shack); the “health and wealth” gospel; the sign and wonders movement; the Bible is a library of conflicting voices and to read it faithfully you must disagree with at least major portions of it; to name a few. Consider the recent book Lies We Believe about God, a book that purports to tell the truth about God, but when compared to what Scripture actually says, is itself a book containing many lies about God.
However bad a lying politician or lying member of the media might be, a false “biblical” teacher is worse. A person may become badly misguided from a lying politician or media member, but believing the lies of a false teacher has eternal consequences. Trusting in the lies of a false “biblical” teacher will likely land that person in Hell for all eternity. There are good reasons why lying is one of the most serious sins one can commit (see Rev. 21:18). Better to believe and follow what the Scriptures directly state, than believe someone’s comforting lies about them.
