Who Is Jesus? Part 3

Who is Jesus? What we’ve found so far is that Jesus is not who or what other religions claim for him. Jesus isn’t the Isa of Islam, the Jesus of Mormonism, the ascended master of Eastern mystical religions. Nor is the true Jesus the Jesus of the Gnostics and the Gnostic gospels such as the Gospel of Thomas, as well as numerous others.

The one place to go to discover who Jesus truly is, is the Bible. Both the Old and New Testaments speak of Him, with arguably the four Gospels being at the center.

First and foremost, Jesus is Immanuel, God with us. Jesus, the Lamb of God, is the perfect sacrifice for our sins, so that we could be forgiven. Jesus is both fully God and fully man. We’ve just finished celebrating Jesus’s birth, His birth as a human. But, Scripture declares that Jesus is far more than just a human being.

Galatians 4:4–5 (NAU): “But when the fullness of the time came, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the Law, so that He might redeem those who were under the Law, that we might receive the adoption as sons.”

Hebrews 1:1–8 (NAU): “God, after He spoke long ago to the fathers in the prophets in many portions and in many ways, in these last days has spoken to us in His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the world. And He is the radiance of His glory and the exact representation of His nature, and upholds all things by the word of His power. When He had made purification of sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, having become as much better than the angels, as He has inherited a more excellent name than they. For to which of the angels did He ever say, ‘You are my Son, today I have begotten you’? And again, ‘I will be a father to him and he shall be a son to me.’”

“And when He again brings the firstborn into the world, He says, ‘And let all the angels of God worship him.’ And of the angels He says, ‘Who makes his angles winds, and his ministers a flame of fire.’ But of the Son He says, ‘Your throne, O God, is forever and ever, and the righteous scepter is the scepter of his kingdom.’”

The Hebrews passage points in a very different direction, doesn’t it? Jesus is clearly more than just a human being. Jesus is God’s Son. That is not what the world wants or prefers to hear.

If Jesus is merely human, he can largely be ignored or made a secondary, non-unique figure. But if Jesus is God, that puts things on a very different level. If Jesus is God, then just maybe we aren’t sovereign in our own right, we might be accountable to someone else in the end. Just maybe our actions will ultimately be judged by God, the real God. That is one of the key reasons that the world hates the real Jesus, and by extension, biblical Christianity: human beings are not sovereign.
