How did the original writings of the earlier “Peoples of the Book,” meaning Jews and Christians, become corrupt? But first, we need to ask: How does Islam know with certainty that the books of Jews and Christians are corrupt?
We’ve already seen that according to the Quran, Jesus is not God, to declare that Jesus is God is to utter the worst blasphemy, to “join gods with God.” We saw that Islamic scholars look to “Christian” source critics and their allies regarding Jesus’s identity as a mere man as additional proof for their insisting that Jesus is not God.
Islamicists also cite source critics for addtional support for their claims against the unity of the Pentateuch, the supposed Law as Judaism now has it. While unlike the extreme skeptics, they hold that Moses did exist (as a devout Muslim!), they’d agree with the skeptics that the writings as we now have them, are not genuine, and certainly not written by Moses. Rather, the writings were cobbled together from various sources by subsequent editors. For the record, per the critics, the four major contributors to the Penteteuch are: the Yahwist, (J); the Elohist (E); the priestly source (P); and the Deuteronomy source, with possible additions (D). Thus, the Quran’s statements regarding the current corrupt state of the Jewish Law, as we now have it, are confirmed.
As for early Christianity, they see the various Gnostic “Christian” sects as proof of the non-unity of early Christianity, that various ancient Christian groups (groups we’d say are not true Christians) rightly held the truth that Jesus wasn’t God.
Even more directly, they look at the four accepted Gospels and reject two of them as suspect. Since neither Mark nor Luke were among the twelve direct disciples of Jesus, their accounts are not primary, and therefore viewed as untrustworthy, full of subsequent errors. Sidenote: there is speculation about who is in view in Mark 14:51, with many maintaining that is Mark, himself, but the text doesn’t give an absolute direct answer. In any case, Mark was not one of the twelve.
Beyond that, the Quran insists that both Jews and Christians must acknowledge God’s final revelation given through Muhammad in the Quran. The Quran supercedes the Old Testament, and while the revelations given to Jesus were more recent than the Old Testament and arguably supercede it, the Quran also supercedes whatever truth might remain in the corrupt version of the New Testament we now possess. The Quran is God’s final revelation.
Since Islam is the original true religion, and the Jewish and Christian writings are now corrupt, where did Judaism and Christianity come from? How did they arise?
