Who Is Jesus? Part 6

As we have been discovering, the evidence for Jesus being God is overwhelming. Yet, there is still more: Jesus’s transfiguration.

Mark 9:1–8 (NAU): And Jesus was saying to them, “Truly I say to you, there are some of those who are standing here who will not taste death until they see the kingdom of God after it has come with power.” Six days later, Jesus took with Him Peter and James and John, and brought them up on a high mountain by themselves. And He was transfigured before them; and His garments became radiant and exceedingly white, as no launderer on earth can whiten them. Elijah appeared to them along with Moses; and they were talking with Jesus. Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi, it is good for us to be here; let us make three tabernacles, one for You, and one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” For he did not know what to answer; for they became terrified. Then a cloud formed, overshadowing them, and a voice came out of the cloud, “This is My beloved Son, listen to Him!” All at once they looked around and saw no one with them anymore, except Jesus alone.

What are we to make of this passage? First, Jesus’s physical appearance is changed before Peter, James, and John. They see something of his divinity. We also see Jesus’s preeminence. Both Moses and Elijah appear: arguably by inference, Moses as a reference to the Law; Elijah as a reference to all the prophets. Peter, sticking his foot in his mouth as he so often does (as do we), seeks to honor all three. God responds by saying that Jesus is the Beloved Son. At that point, only Jesus the Son remains. Once more, the irrefutable conclusion is that Jesus is God.

But there is still more: consider human testimony. While many examples could be cited, we will focus on just one.

John 20:24–29 (NAU): But Thomas, one of the twelve, called Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came. So the other disciples were saying to him, “We have seen the Lord!” But he said to them, “Unless I see in His hands the imprint of the nails, and put my finger into the place of the nails, and put my hand into His side, I will not believe.” After eight days His disciples were again inside, and Thomas with them. Jesus came, the doors having been shut, and stood in their midst and said, “Peace be with you.” Then He said to Thomas, “Reach here with your finger, and see My hands; and reach here your hand and put it into My side; and do not be unbelieving, but believing.” Thomas answered and said to Him, “My Lord and my God!” Jesus said to him, “Because you have seen Me, have you believed? Blessed are they who did not see, and yet believed.”

How does Jesus respond to Thomas? Does Jesus rebuke him for saying that Jesus is God? No. Jesus lets Thomas’s statement about Jesus being God, stand

If the statement were not true, we’d expect a rebuke, wouldn’t we? Consider the end of Revelation. Twice, John is about to worship the angel who is revealing all sorts of incredible things to him. Twice, the angel commands him not to do that, as God alone is to be worshiped.

Jesus is God. We’ve examined many confirmations of Jesus’s deity. Yet, there is even more, as we will see in the next post.
