What have we seen going on politically since the murder of Charlie Kirk? On the one hand, the Left has been spewing forth a nearly endless stream of lies. Some, though not all, have proclaimed how glad they are that Charlie Kirk was “offed.” Those on the political Right, while arguably not to the same extent, have sometimes responded in kind. In the end, both sides are polarized, both sides have at least disdain, if not outright hatred, for the other. To this point we have not been speaking about biblical, Christ-centered responses, but responses on the political level.
Biblically speaking, there is a major problem, a problem evidenced on both sides of the political aisle. We see that problem through what Jesus, himself, said about dealing with others.
Luke 6:31 (NAU): “Treat others the same way you want them to treat you.”
Mark 12:28–31 (NAU): One of the scribes came and heard them arguing, and recognizing that He had answered them well, asked Him, “What commandment is the foremost of all?” Jesus answered, “The foremost is, ‘Hear, O Israel! The Lord our God is one Lord; and you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ The second is this, ‘ You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.”
First, we are to treat others the same way that we want to be treated. Second, we are to love our neighbor as ourselves. Jesus was then asked the question, “Who is my neighbor?” In his response, the parable of the good Samaritan, Luke 10:30–37, Jesus made it clear that the people one most despised were one’s neighbors. In context, specifically for the Jews at that time, their neighbors included the Samaritans, the group they most hated and despised.
How does that impact us politically today (even for those who avoid politics)? For the Left, biblically speaking, those in the political Right are their neighbors; for the political Right, those in the political Left are their neighbors. What does that mean?
Those on the political Left are to love those in the political Right the same way they love themselves, while those on the political Right are to love those on the political Left in the same way that they love themselves.
But as will see in the next post, it gets harder.
