The Miracle of Christmas

The Gospel of John starts, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being” (Jn. 1:1-3 NAU). John 1:14 adds, “And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.”

What do these verses tell us? First, the Word was with God from the beginning. Second, the Word was God. Third, the Word was not only directly involved in creation, but that the Word created everything. Most importantly, verse 14 reveals that the Word became flesh and lived among us. In other words, the Word is a direct reference to Jesus Christ, and that Jesus Christ is indeed God.

Think about that for just a bit. Jesus, who created everything was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary (see Matthew 1:18–23). God became a baby boy. Jesus goes from existing for all eternity past and creating everything to being born as a helpless baby. A baby can’t feed itself; a baby needs diapers; a baby is totally dependent on others in order to survive. As a baby, Jesus subjected himself to the care of sinful humans.

Jesus willingly came to earth as a baby in order to redeem us. Hebrews 4:15 tells us, “For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin.” Jesus came to earth to live a sinless life, and die as a sacrifice for our sins, that through Him, we could be saved (Romans 5:6–8).

Better yet, Jesus will come again. Hebrews 9:28: “So Christ also, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time for salvation without reference to sin, to those who eagerly await Him.” As Jesus directly stated, “In My Father's house are many dwelling places; if it were not so, I would have told you; for I go to prepare a place for you. If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself, that where I am, there you may be also” (John 14:2-3).

In spite of COVID-19, in spite of the political unrest, in spite of the scary trends in terms of where our country appears to be headed, we have much to celebrate this Christmas. As believers in Christ, our eternal hope is secure, our ultimate destiny is certain. We truly can rejoice.
