Knowing God’s will for our lives. If there is one thing that often eludes us, it is knowing the specifics of God’s will for us.
God exhorts us to know His will. Ephesians 5:17 (NAU): “So then do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.” As we walk in God’s will, we are far less likely to be walk in our own will, seeking our own desires, living for self. Note that we are to understand God’s will. We aren’t to walk as mindless zombies.
But that exhortation doesn’t answer the question, “How?” The answers about knowing God’s will are not hidden secrets. We just have to do them.
First, ask God in prayer. Colossians 1:9–10 (NAU): “For this reason also, since the day we heard of it, we have not ceased to pray for you and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, so that you will walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, to please Him in all respects, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God.”
Pray that God would reveal His will. That knowledge is based on spiritual wisdom and understanding. Apart from God, through the leading of the Holy Spirit, we won’t know it.
We are also to increase in our knowledge of God. We should be growing in our faith. The more we grow, the more we will understand what God’s will is for us.
If we never spend time with God, if we don’t talk to Him, how will we know His will? We won’t.
Yet there’s an even more important way to know God’s will, His direction for our lives. That is through spending time reading Scripture. We’ll turn to that topic in the next post.
