When we think of counterfeits, we tend to think of movements that while false, purport to be genuine. After all, the counterfeit will seek to appear as real as possible; few are deceived by something that screams, “I’m a counterfeit!” Groups such as the Mormons and Jehovah’s Witnesses come to mind.
Here’s where it gets interesting. I strongly suspect that many of the posts on social media seeking to raise doubts or discredit Asbury may in and of themselves be counterfeit posts, written for that very purpose.
Jesus declares, in John 8:44, that the devil is the father of lies. We should therefore expect false posts on social media along with false accusations regarding any true or even suspected move of God. Remember too, that Satan, or the devil, is also known as the accuser. We need to read social media posts with discernment. If Satan can get us to believe enough lies about any supposed move of God, he can potentially lessen that move’s impact.
Note the timing of Asbury. What had just happened? At the Grammy’s a couple days prior, Sam Smith and Kim Petras won a Grammy and performed their satanic hit, “Unholy” (the subject of the next blog series). Asbury followed next, and then the negative posts about Asbury a few days later.
Spiritual warfare is real. It isn’t a yin and yang thing where one can claim that both good and evil are equal opposites, in balance with each other, with both being needed. Rather, biblically, evil is truly evil, and Jesus Christ is the only real solution for it. We also know that Christ is the Victor over sin, death, and the devil. Again, we can expect people to be posting lies about Asbury.
In addition, often the one being used by Satan is blissfully unaware of it. Consider Peter: he had just realized and confessed the truth, that Jesus was the Messiah, God’s Son, something Jesus said the Father had revealed to him (Matthew 16:16–17). What happens next? Jesus tells him: “Get behind me, Satan!” Peter goes from speaking divinely inspired wisdom to being a mouthpiece for Satan. We can unintentionally go from speaking truth to declaring lies painfully easily, just as Peter did.
But, you might be asking, what about aspects of Asbury that aren’t biblically spot on, not to mention other problems? We’ll turn to that question in the next post.
