Thought for Today

Dying Well

I received news this past week about the death of one of my uncles. If ever there was someone who Hebrews 11:4 applied to, it was him. Even though he is now dead, he still speaks. He was in his early 80s.

Although he had at one point retired from pastoring, he had returned to it a few years ago. He also was involved in leading the church youth group—how many people in their 80s do you know who lead church youth groups, and how many youth groups do you know who want to be led by 80 year olds?

He was a life-long hiker and technical mountain climber. On the day of his death he was leading the youth group on a hike to the top of a mountain. Upon reaching the summit, and looking over the view, he collapsed and died. Not only did he die doing what he loved to do, he died while ministering to the youth group. I cannot think of a better way to pass on from this earth. God truly had renewed his strength like the eagle’s throughout his long life. I am thankful that one day, I will see him again.
