The Miracle of Christmas, part 2

At Christmas, we celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, the only person in all of history who was both fully human and fully God. But as we saw, throughout history that has been disputed. Some have insisted that Jesus was only human while others have said that the “Christ” that appeared on earth was just a spirit, and therefore not human at all.

In response, we point to many different Scripture verses, among them Romans 1:1–4. As for Jesus being God, Jesus directly confesses that truth in Mark 14:61–62, Luke 22:67–70 and Matthew 26:63–64. Some insist Jesus didn’t really say that, but the leaders well understood his answer, as their mocking in Matthew 27:42–43 indicates, “For He said, 'I am the Son of God.'" 2 Peter 1: 1 and Titus 2:13 are very direct, stating “our God and Savior, Jesus Christ.”

Many of the New Testament letters include some version of the phrase “God the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ” (Romans 15:6; 2 Corinthians 1:3, 11:31; Ephesians 1:3; Colossians 1:3; 1 Peter 1:3; 2 John 1:3). There are about 20 references in the New Testament to Jesus being the Son of God, of which Romans 1:4, mentioned above, is typical. As John 20:20–21 and 1 John 4:15 indicate, in order to be a Christian, one must believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God.

As for Jesus being human, Jesus describes himself as the “Son of Man” about 75 times. 1 Timothy 2:5 and Romans 5:15 both declare that Jesus was human.  1 John 4:1–3 and 2 John 1:7 are particularly sobering. Both state that Jesus came in the flesh. Both add that if someone insists that Jesus Christ did not come in the flesh, that person is a false prophet and aligned with the antichrist.

To sum up, it is critical that we believe that Jesus Christ is both fully God and fully man. To believe anything less is to fall short of being a true Christian.
