How did we reach this point of anything, or any “truth”, goes? That is, anything goes except the idea that absolutes might exist, and that anything might, in the end, not go. Least acceptable of all is that there might be a God who will one day hold us accountable for our choices and actions. Of course, to say that “anything goes” is itself a self-contradictory exclusionary self-defeating statement. How did we come to the point where being a therian or otherkin is something to be celebrated? How did the radical change transpire?
The postmodern philosopher Richard Rorty, in a rare candid moment, disclosed how changes were to be implemented. They would use the same words that had a long history of specific meaning, but deliberately redefine their meaning. Since those words had been redefined, what one said would have a radically different meaning from what others thought was being said. The goal was that by the time one’s opponents realized words had been redefined, they would have been converted to your position. Thus, words like “democracy,” “male,” “female,” “love,” “tolerance,” “homosexual,” and arguably even “evangelical” were redefined to mean something different from their long-held traditional meaning.
As Derrida posited in his deconstruction, words have no real meaning. Thus, they can be redefined to mean whatever one wants, whatever one’s group deems appropriate. There’s no problem at all with doing that. By hiding one’s true intentions—in essence lying—one can change the direction of a culture, an enterprise that has largely proven successful.
Where does that leave us? Since there is no truth, there are no lies; there is only opinion, and that, by definition, is relative. Anything that benefits “the cause” is ok. Whether that cause is a political agenda, generating sales for a specific company’s product, or manipulating other people or groups so one can benefit as a result, it is ok.
Fragmentation follows. Jesus had much to say about divided kingdoms, and how any divided kingdom will fall. There are no exceptions, and the United States, barring repentance, will not be one either.
In our no-truth environment, what about Christianity? On the one hand, we often see cultural, typically politically driven forms of Christianity. But are those cultural forms truly biblically Christian? We will start to address that question in the next post.
