Should Christians enter the political world?
With my comments on Christian Nationalism, one might think that the answer that question might be a resounding, “No!” Instead, the actual answer is an emphatic, “Yes.” If God has gifted a specific Christian with abilities in the political field, that person should by all means enter the political realm.
There isn’t any aspect of life that Christians shouldn’t participate in. Granted there are specific situations that we cannot participate in: “occupations” that God directly calls sinful: a biblical Christian cannot be a “Christian medium,” for example.
But there is every reason to participate in such fields as music, acting, other artistic fields, the business world, science, and politics (to name a few). People desperately need Jesus—people in all fields and walks of life—and if we stay in our own “holy huddle” or “Christian bubble” as one author named it, we don’t do the world much of any good.
One could even build the case that if we stay in our “holy huddles” or the “Christian ghetto,” then the world has won. Instead of us attacking the defensive gates of Hell, gates that Jesus states will not overcome the church (Matthew 16:18), we retreat, and take a frightened defensive position instead.
In that conflict, many Christians may perish. One thinks of the long history of Christian martyrs, of people being killed for refusing to renounce Christ. We continue to see that to this very day, especially in Islamic countries, where to dare say that Jesus is God is the worst blasphemy one could possibly commit.
Jesus also encourages us in Matthew 10:28 to not fear those enemies. All they can do is kill us and nothing more. They can’t take away our eternal salvation in Christ. They can’t impact our eternal destiny. Rather, we are to fear God, who can destroy both soul and body in Hell.
To state the obvious: that battle includes the world of politics. No attempt is made to hide or camouflage our nation’s increasing ungodliness. The Senate, Congress, the judicial system, and the Oval Office all need Christian representatives. The key difference from Christian nationalism though is to go forth as missionaries, as ambassadors for Christ, with the goal of seeing people come to Christ. Only Jesus Christ can solve our country’s sin issue. That process starts through individual people coming to genuine faith in Christ, of Christ changing people’s lives, one person at a time.
Should Christians enter the political realm? Yes.
