Progress on the Double-Bass!
Monday, November 3, 2025 by Dr. James W. Walraven

Consistent practice on the double-bass. After nearly a year of neglect, I’m finally returning to it. After a few weeks of doing nothing but scales—necessary to begin to shake all the rust off and regain a sense of the instrument—I’ve started working on a few pieces, particularly those for church type recitals.

Much to my surprise, some of them, though not sounding good, were still more or less under my fingers. As I start bringing the various pieces back, some of them won’t be, but that some of them are, is very good news. Particularly for church type recitals it should speed the process up considerably. Obviously, that is a real praise God thing.

I’ve also started to get basic callouses back, and as they grow and harden, that will allow for longer practice sessions, which will also help.

All and all, I’m encouraged.

Note: This computer is being taken in tomorrow for some overdue maintenance and a couple upgrades. I will therefore not be able to post. I also don’t know how long it will take, so I don’t know when I’ll be resuming. Hopefully, I won’t be gone too long.
